Can I remove asbestos myself in Scotland?
There’s no outright ban on a householder removing certain lower-risk materials, but it’s strongly discouraged. Breaking or dropping asbestos cement releases fibres, and you still have to transport and dispose of it legally at a licensed site, which most tips won’t take from the public. It’s almost always cheaper and safer to have it done properly.
How long does removal take?
Most domestic jobs are done in a single day. A garage or shed roof is usually a half day to a day, artex and floor tiles one to two days depending on rooms. Larger jobs are quoted with their own timescale so you know exactly how long the site is tied up.
What paperwork do I get afterwards?
Every job comes with a waste consignment note confirming your asbestos was tracked and disposed of at a licensed facility, the document that proves it left your property legally. If you’re selling, letting or handing a site back, this is what you’ll be asked for.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the material, how much there is and how easy it is to reach. Rather than quote a vague range that turns out wrong, we look at your job and give one fixed price in writing before anything starts. Testing first, if needed, starts from £195 + VAT with UKAS-accredited lab analysis.
What needs a licensed contractor instead?
We do non-licensed removal: cement roofs and cladding, gutters, artex, floor tiles, water tanks, soffits, flues, the great majority of what people actually have. Insulating board, lagging, sprayed coatings and loose-fill insulation need an HSE-licensed contractor. Don’t worry about working out which is which, send a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.
Do I need a survey first?
Not always. If it’s obvious, like a corrugated cement garage roof, we can often quote straight from photographs. If we’re not certain, a sample and lab test confirms it quickly and cheaply. Commercial refurb or demolition usually needs an R&D survey first, which we can also carry out.
Is it dangerous if I just leave it alone?
Sealed, undamaged material in good condition is generally low risk left undisturbed. The risk appears when it’s damaged, weathered, drilled or broken. That’s exactly what happens during renovation, storms, or an old roof reaching end of life. If it’s cracked, crumbling or in the way of planned works, it should come out.
How quickly can you get to me?
Quotes usually go out the same day, and most domestic jobs are booked within days rather than weeks. If it’s urgent, say a disturbed material in a family home or a site that can’t open, tell us when you call and we’ll prioritise it.
